Articles - Chapter -2

 We have already discussed uses of Articles in detail in previous chapter. 

 Here we shall discuss some Important Points about Articles and give some good exercise for Students in different forms.

A- is used before  vowel sound. 

An - is used before consonant sound. 

(A/An are used With singular countable nouns Which are Indefinite). 

The - is used with Specific nouns.

Exercise -1 Use correct articles- 

1. What do you buy? 

    I buy .... newspaper. 

2. What is there in your bag? 

     There is. .... novel in my bag. 

3. Which is the highest mountains? 

     ...... Himalyas are the highest mountains. 

4. Which book are you reading? 

    I am reading. ..... Gita.

5. Name the holy river of India. 

     ...... Ganges is a holy river of India. 

6. What do you have in your pocket? 

     There is .....orange in my pocket.

7.  What is your father? 

     He is. ...... software engineer. 

8. Where do you work? 

     I work in .... multinational company.

Use of “the” at a glance (Examples) - 

with certain time Expressions -

Note: There is no article in “at night, at midnight '. Now look at following phrases- 

• in the morning

• in the evening

• in the afternoon

with intentions -

• The radio was invented in 1920.

• Marconi invented the telegraph.

• The iPad was invented in 2009.

• The electric light bulb was invented by Edison.

With names of museums, gardens, and Zoos -

• The San Diego Zoo is great.

• The Metropolitan Museum is on museum mile in New York.

• The Botanical Gardens has hundreds of kinds of flowers.

With historical periods of Time -

• The Ice Age lasted many years.

• There were two terrible wars in the twentieth century.

• Dante lived in the Middle Ages.

With police, fire department, and branches of the military -

• The police are coming right now.

• Barbara is in the army.

• The navy and the air force are attacking the port.
