Verb - Part 2
Let's know more about Verb.
We have read about Auxiliary Verb & main verb.
Auxiliary Verb is made from 3 Primary Verbs -
. Be - is, am, are & was , were
. Have - Has, have & had
. Do - do , does & Did
Be, Have & Do are Primary Verbs.
Others are Auxiliary Verbs or Helping Verbs.
Remember that Auxiliary Verb (Helping Verbs) help us to know the tense being used.
Look at following sentences -
1. He is doing his work. (Present Tense )
2. I was watching TV. (Past tense)
3. He does not like milk. (Present Tense)
4. She has finished her dinner. (Present Tense)
5. The boys had reached the school at 9:00 am. (Past Tense)
6. Shyam and Ram are playing games. (Present Tense)
Types of Verb - Verb is of 2 Types -
1. Transitive Verb - A Transitive Verb is that has an object to follow. (A verb Which is used with a object is called a Transitive Verb) .
Example -
1. I read a book.
2. He loves cartoon serials.
3. The boys are playing hockey.
4. My father sent a gift to me.
In these sentences, read, loves, playing and sent are Transitive Verbs.
2. Intransitive Verb - An Intransitive Verb is that does not have an object to follow. (A verb Which is used with an object is called an Intransitive Verb) .
Example -
1. He speaks loudly.
2. I don't run.
3. The fire burns brightly.
4. The boys reach in time .
5. Dies water boil at 100C ?
In above sentences, verbs used don't have an object. These verbs are Intransitive verbs.
Note - Some verbs can be used in both forms - Transitive Verb & Intransitive Verb.
Example -
1. He reads a Newspaper. Tr. Verb
He reads very slowly. Intr. Verb
2. I burn fire. Tr. Verb
The fire burns. Intr. Verb
3. They run everyday. Intr. Verb
They run a race. Tr. Verb
4. The teacher teaches very well. Intr. Verb.
The teacher teaches Science. Tr. Verb
Read again to understand the Transitive & Intransitive verb very clearly.
Changing Verb into nouns -
Language is a puzzle of words. We should try to understand the nature of words which are changeable. Verbs can be changed into Nouns.

Go. Gait. Enter. Entrance
Depart. Departure Teach. Teachings
Laugh. Laughter. Sell. Sale
Break. Breach. Believe Belief

Apply. Application pray. Prayer
Win. Victory confuse. Confusion
Discover discovery invent. Invention

There Can be many more Examples of such Verbal nouns (nouns derived from Verbs).
Uses of Auxiliary Verbs (Helping Verbs) -
Is, am & are show Present Tense. Auxiliary Verbs are also used without main verb.
1. He is my best friend. Simple use
2. The children are happy and healthy. Simple use
3. The students are studying. Present continuous tense.
4. I am very hungry. Simple use.
5. The peon is ringing the bell. Present continuous tense.
Note the difference in usage of Verbs in above sentences.
Exercise -
1. I have a big house. Simple use
2. I have bought a new house. Pr. Perfect Tense
3. She has no time for you. Simple use
4. Kiran has passed the exam. Pr. Perfect Tense
5. Kiran has no books . Simple use
Uses of Active Verb - Active Verbs are also called Action Verbs.
Each Action Verb has 3 forms - V1, V2 & V3.
V1 is used to show Present Tense.
Example -
1. Shobhit reads a newspaper.
2. I like sweets.
3. The trees give us vegetables.
4. The child drinks milk.
5. The children write letters.
V2 is used to show Past Tense.
Example -
1. The manager helped the customer last week.
2. The gardener planted many trees yesterday.
3. They won the match two years ago.
4. The headmistress arranged a quiz .
V3 is used in all perfect Tenses -
1. I have completed my work. Pr. Perfect Tense
2. The teacher had taught the lesson. Past perfect
3. Raman and Sonu have reached the theatre. Pr. Perfect Tense
4. Anup Kumar has bought a new car. Pr. Perfect Tense.
